Abstract
648,261. Discharge apparatus. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. May 30, 1947, No. 14443. Convention date, June 17, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] An ion generator comprises in combination two coaxial electrodes placed in an enclosure containing gas at a low pressure, the outer electrode being of a metal having a high secondary electron emission and a high-tension, high-frequency voltage being applied between the two electrodes and means for extracting the ions formed in the en. closure. A metal cylinder 1, e.g. of tungsten, surrounds a thin rod 2, the whole being contained in an enclosure containing gas at pressure 10<SP>-7</SP>-10<SP>-6 </SP>mm. An alternating potential of frequency 100 megahertz is applied between the rod and the cylinder, the period being equal to the transit time of an electron leaving the outer electrode and returning thereto. A grid 4 at a slightly negative potential causes extraction of the ions. In a modification (not shown), the ions are extracted by an electronic lens of three diaphragms.
