Abstract

386,356. Wireless transmitting systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. -(Assignees of Langmuir, 1.; 6, Stratford Road, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 31, 1931, No. 24448. Convention date, Sept.'2, 1930. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] An electron-discharge device in which a sheath of positive ions is attracted by a negative charge on an electrode 6, Fig. 2, immersed in an ionized gas or vapour is used as a variable capacitance in high-frequency signal transmission systems, the thickness of the sheath, and so the capacitance, being controlled in accordance with the signals and varying the frequency of the oscillations transmitted. The thickness of the sheath is varied by varying the potential of the electrode 6 or the ionization of the gas. It is stated that the electrode 6 acts as one plate of the capacitance, the gas being the other plate and the sheath of ions being the dielectric, and formulae for the capacitance at various frequencies are given. The. electrode 6 may be a plate or grid and may be immersed in uniformly ionized gas or in the region about a column discharge. Oscillations generated by a triode 8, a tuned circuit 9 and a piezo-electric crystal 10 are varied in frequency by the capacitance between the electrode 6 and an electron-emitting cathode 2. The speechcurrent transformer 25 may vary the potential of the anode 3 or electrode 6 relatively to the cathode 2, or of the cathode 2 relatively to both electrodes 3, 6 or may be centre-tapped and connected as in Fig. 5. Batteries 5, 7 maintain the electrodes 3, 6 positive and negative with respect to the cathode 2. The oscillations are transmitted through an amplifier or frequency-multiplier 12. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of the discharge device as a variable capacitance in electric circuits generally. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
