Abstract

696,810. Velocity-modulated tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 14, 1946 [March 15, 1945], No. 17969/46. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XL(c)] An electron discharge device of the velocity modulation type has a multiple resonating structure formed by a grid or network of fine wires, Fig. 2. Each pair of wires 5 and 6 is in the same vertical plane, and are connected by the transverse pair of wires 7, which are spaced apart a multiple of a half wavelength of the operating frequency. The structure is traversed vertically by the electron stream, each separate rectangular cell bounded by the wires 5, 6, and 7 forming a resonator. Fig. 1 shows this resonating structure employed in a velocity modulation device of the reflex type, having a cathode 1, control grid 3 and reflector electrode 4. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates the positioning of the device of Fig. 1 at the focus of a parabolic reflector to produce a beam of radiation.
