Abstract
698,875. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. DELANY, B. P., and COPELAND, P. L. Feb. 20, 1950, No. 4302/50..Class 39(i) A discharge tube having a liquid cathode is provided with a solid supplementary cathode arranged above and connected to the liquid cathode to enlarge the active cathode area whilst constricting the discharge on to the surface of the liquid cathode. A tube 1, Fig. 1, comprises a tantalum or nickel anode 2, a mercury or caesium cathode 3 and a frustoconical tantalum supplementary cathode 5 which facilitates the production of a glow discharge and the subsequent formation of the cathode spot; it is connected through the lead-in support 4 to the cathode 3. A clearance 6 may be provided between the member 5 and the tube or it may be in contact therewith. In another form, a glass funnel or flared tube is sealed at its upper end to the tube so that its lower end dips into the liquid cathode and is 'coated internally with tungsten or silicon; the lower end of the flared tube may be flattened. In a further form, a straight or flared glass tube 12, Fig. 3, is sealed to the tube and carries a copper perforated plate cathode 16 connected to the cathode 3 by metal wires 17a.
