Abstract
586,266. Electron discharge apparatus. GRAVES, A., DAWES, T. J., and ALLTOOLS, Ltd. April 12, 1945, Nos. 9166 and 30461. [Class 39 (i)] An ionisation, chamber of the Geiger-M³ller counter type has an envelope 10 with a pinch 20 through which are sealed supports for a cylindrical cathode 15 whose length is not appreciably greater than its diameter and a coaxial wire anode 18. The cathode is of copper with an internal surface film of copper oxide or copper hydride, is supported by a contact strip 22 of nickel or molybdenum, and may have an aperture 23 opposite the window 14 which is of soap bubble thickness and is sealed in position as in Specification 559,181. The anode 18 is of tungsten and is spot welded to the wires 19 and 20, the upper parts of which are enclosed in tubular upward extensions 21 of the pinch. The filling is a mixture of an inert gas, e.g. argon and about 10 per cent dry air, or alcohol or acetone to act as a " quencher " at a pressure of from 3 to 9 centimetres of mercury.
