Abstract
775,277. Discharge tubes. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. March 25, 1955 [March 26, 1954], No. 8899/54. Class 39(1). A centring and supporting member for an electrode system is of metal having an insulating coating or film of oxide at least where it touches the system. In one form the support member 1, of very pure aluminium, is anodised to form an insulating layer 1a, the electrodes 4 being supported in suitable indentations. The support may be formed as a long narrow strip, afterwards folded in two, or as a blanked out slotted form, afterwards compressed around the electrodes. Alternatively the supporting strip 20 with its anodised coating 21 may be bent into a U-shape to grip the electrodes 22 or 24, and the strip may be crimped between each electrode, as at 25. In Fig. 5 the electrodes 28 are retained in the support 26 with a minimum of contact. The metal support may be earthed so that it acts as an electrostatic shield. It may be mounted inside a glass envelope by cantilever springs, or in a crimped portion of a metal envelope.
