Abstract
302,315. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Ruggles, W. A.). Dec. 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Low pressure metallicvapour apparatus.-In the method of introducing alkali and other readilv oxidizable metals, such as caesium, into capillary tubes, described in Specification 296,347. sodiummagnesium - borosilicate glass is used, so that, on .fusing the ends of the tubes to seal them, the caesium &c. reacts with the glass at the ends and forms a vitreous material having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the intermediate portions of the tube. When intended for use with electron discharge devices and the like, the sealed tubes 9 are mounted by metal straps 10 on a thin nickel &c. disc 6 mounted on a leading-in wire 7 and a supporting wire 8 connected to the anode 2. When it is desired to liberate the caesium &c., the disc 6 is heated by a high-frequency current. The edge of the disc becomes heated first, and causes the ends of the capillary tubes to crack without shattering or causing loose pieces, and the caesium &c. distils. The method may be used for forming a light-sensitive coating in a photo-electric cell, as described in Specification 303,476.
