Abstract
474,706. Uniting metal to vitreous material by heat. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 27, 1936, No. 32553. Convention date, Feb. 4. [Class 36] A method of forming a glass to metal seal, in the manufacture of an envelope for an electron discharge comprises placing a metallic disc 14, Fig. 1, between a pair of hollow glass members 10, 12 having openings with edges opposite each other and in contact with the disc, and generating heat in the metallic disc by high frequency induction to fuse the glass members to it. The example shows an electron-discharge tube with an exhausting tube 11 sealed to the portion 10, and electrode supports or leading-in conductors 13 sealed in apertures in the end portion 12 prior to the sealing together of the members 10, 12, 14. In a modification, the disc 14, Fig. 3, is provided with integral sockets 18 to receive vitreous beads 19 fused to the rods or wires 13, the disc 14 then being seated upon the open end of the member 10 and an auxiliary or backing ring 20 of vitreous material seated upon the disc 14 with its lower edge in juxtaposition to the edge of the member 10. The disc 14 is subsequently heated by high frequency induction to fuse the members 10, 20 to the disc 14 and also fuse the beads 19 within the sockets 18. Alternatively the upper vitreous ring 20 may be dispensed with, the metal disc then preferably being of an alloy of iron, nickel, and cobalt having substantially the same coefficient of expansion as the glass which is fused thereto.
