Abstract

251,635. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Coolidge, W. D.). April 28, 1925, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes. - An electron stream from an incandescent cathode emerges from the exhausted container through a large window 8, Fig. 1, supported internally against atmospheric pressure, and the stream is constricted by means of a focussing device 4 so as to enter the narrow end of a copper or other funnel 9 serving as anode. Alternating or direct current, at a pressure of 200,000 volts, may be used. The window 8 may be of thin sheet molybdenum or copper; aluminium is less suitable. It may be supported by a grating 13, Fig. 3, of sheet molybdenum bent into hexagonal cells, and cemented or copper-soldered to a ring 12 supporting the edge of the window; or a mechanical joint may be used. These parts may be brazed to a flanged collar 14 of metal-iron alloy, the edge of which is acetylene-welded to a second flanged collar 15 of copper-plated nickel-iron, sealed to the glass container. A ring 16 secured within the collar 14 supports the copper funnel 9. A constricted part 3, Fig. 1, of the container is of thick glass or is coated with insulating cement. The device may be permanently exhausted or maintained in connection with a pump. Liquid to be treated with cathode rays may flow through a chamber fitted against the window and provided with a spiral partition. Colorations may be produced by the rays in glass, quartz, and potassium chloride, bromide and iodide. Specifications 10338/12, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting]; 14892/13 and 10454/15; and 148,129, [Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting &c.]; are referred to.
