Abstract
624,090. Glass-to-metal seals. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. June 28, 1946, No. 19380. Convention date, May 20, 1942. [Class 36] [Also in Groups XXIII and XL (a)] Glass and metal members are hermetically secured together by means of a layer of glaze having a cellular but vacuum-tight structure. The coefficient of expansion of the sealing material is preferably of the same order as that of the parts to be joined. Low melting-point material such as described in Specification 2465/46 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) may be used, the cellular structure being obtained by limiting the temperature or the time of sealing; e.g. a 0.2 mm. layer in powder form mixed with water may be applied to the foot of an electric discharge tube or incandescent lamp which is then heated to not more than 580‹ C. for 2 mins.; the bulb is subsequently positioned and sealed on by heating to 480‹ C. for 2-3 mins.
