Abstract

519,355. Jointing glass. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON, CO., Ltd., SCOTT, W. J., and COWHIG, W. T. Oct. 15 1938, No. 29913 [Class 56] [Also in Groups XI and XL] A method of sealing glass or similar enclosures such as an incandescent lamp bulb 1 consists in applying heat to, so as to fuse, the internallyprojecting end 3 of a tube through which the pressure within the enclosure is adjusted prior to sealing. Heating may be effected electrically by a heater coil 4 fed separately from, or in parallel with, the filament 6, or by. an inductively-heated metal cap 14, Fig. 4, placed over the end of the tube 4 and movable so as to apply pressure thereto. The method is more particularly applicable to enclosures filled with gas under pressure such as discharge devices but is also applicable to evacuated vessels such as thermionic valves, vacuum flasks &c. According to the Provisional Specification, an externally-projecting tube on the enclosure is sealed off by heating within a bell-jar which is hermetically sealed and connected to a vacuum pump or gas supply system.
