Abstract
682,377. Glass-to-metal seals. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. May 4, 1951 [June 20, 1950], No. 10494/51. Class 36. In making a glass-to-molybdenum seal the surface of the molybdenum is oxidized by induction heating and the glass is then fused to the oxidized surface by induction heating in an inert atmosphere. A molybdenum tube 12 is first cleaned, as by firing in dry hydrogen at 1000‹ C. for ten minutes, and then oxidized by induction heating in air at about 1000 ‹ C. for thirty seconds. The tube is aligned with a borosilicate glass tube 12 and the assembly heated to 1000-1200‹ C. in an inert atmosphere for about one minute, pressure being applied to push the molybdenum tube into the glass to form a seal 13.
