Abstract
750,333. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 26, 1954 [July 24, 1953], No. 20553/53. Class 39 (1). A cathode-ray tube such as a television projection tube has a window of glass which has been toughened, i.e. subjected to a tempering process which leaves it in a state of residual strain. The window is sealed to the glass or metal body portion remote from the neck by a low-temperature glaze, and is not subsequently subjected to any temperature high enough to anneal the glass, i.e. to eliminate the residual strain. The strain may be induced either before or after the window is sealed in position; in the latter case, normal heat-sealing techniques may be used. It may be of advantage to toughen the whole tube, not only the window.
