Abstract
581,545. Metal-to-glass seals. NOKES, M. C. Sept. 11, 1944, No. 17333. [Class 36] Tungsten, in the form of wire, foil, or plate, is sealed to boro-silicate or like hard glass by means of tungsten-bronze formed as a coating on the wire &c. the glass being then softened to form a hermetic seal with the bronze. The wire &c. is first surface-oxidized and then dipped into molten sodium tungstate; or the heated wire &c. dipped into the powdered tungstate. The tungstate bead is fused to wet the required portion of the wire &c. and then heated further to react with the underlying oxide to produce a tungsten bronze of the required colour. Excess of the sodium tungstate is removed by immersion in boiling water.
