A metal wire or rod extending through a hole in a metal plate is sealed by vitreous or other thermoplastic sealing material, the hole having an enlarged cross-section within the thickness of the plate to accommodate excess of sealing material over that necessary to seal the hole at its minimum cross-sectional area and thus obviate the possibility of it spreading over the surface of the plate. The hole may be enlarged by tapering it or by countersinking.
