Abstract

824,843. Metal-to-glass seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Sept. 12, 1956 [Sept. 12, 1955], No. 26067/55. Class 36. A glass-to-metal seal consists of a molybdenum conductor having a surface coating containing silicon hermetically sealed to a composite boro-silicate boro-phosphate glass with the boro-phosphate glass in contact with the silicon containing coating. The silicon coating may be effected by exposing the molybdenum to halide of silicon or by embedding it in silicon powder and passing hydrogen and hydrogen chloride thereover for about 30 minutes at 950‹ C. The seal is stated to be especially useful in electric discharge devices in which the vapour of alkali metals such as caesium is present. Specifications 675,594, [Group XXIII], and 730,855 are referred to.
