Abstract
815,395. Sealing electric lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 19, 1957 [Nov. 19, 1956], No. 35312/56. Class 39(2) [Also in Groups XXIII and XL(a)] The glass sealing-off stem of a device such as a discharge tube or a lamp in which the pressure is greater inside than outside has an external coating of a material of higher softening temperature than the stem itself; thus when the stem is heated to be pinched off, the coating forms a reinforcement to prevent the softened stem from blowing out. The coating may also be of glass, or a metal such as copper, tin, zinc, bronze, or brass. The coating may be in two layers, e.g. a first layer of zinc and a second layer of copper, bronze, or brass. The coating is preferably thicker where the stem is to be pinched.
