Abstract

[Also in Group XXXVI] A process for forming over a slot 2 in a metal wall 1 a window of vitreous material hermetically sealed to the rim of the slot and a protective dome over the window, for use in a T.R. device, consists in assembling the metal wall 1 with a length of glass tubing 4 located with its longitudinal axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slot and then heating the wall to cause the portion of the glass tubing in contact with the wall to soften and sink on and seal to the metal wall around the rim of the slot, whilst leaving the remainder of the tubing to constitute the dome. The heating may be effected by high frequency induction in an atmosphere of non-oxidizing or reducing gas or gases. With a narrow slot (about # in and under) the plastic glass is supported in the slot by its own surface tension. With wide slots (say “ in. or more) it may be necessary to support the centre of the glass pane e.g. by providing a gas pressure differential on opposite sides of the pane. The ends of the glass tubing 4 may be sealed to form an enclosure which is filled with gas and/or water vapour through an evacuating tubulation. Alternatively the ends of the tubing may be tapered to openings which may be made to an exact size e.g. by sealing in short lengths of vitreous or ceramic tubing.
