640,292. Glass-metal seals. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 20, 1947, No. 28060. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1946. [Class 36] A glass-metal seal is made by interposing a thin vitreous layer 18 between the glass 10, 11 and the metal body 12, the vitreous layer containing ions of the metal of which the body 12 is made. In the case of a glass-copper seal the vitreous layer preferably consists of a suspension of finely-powdered glass, mixed with cuprous chloride. This is applied to the copper member at the point where the seal is to be made, the copper then being heated to drive off the suspending medium and fuse the glass particles on the copper surface. This vitreous layer can readily be sealed to the glass member. The glass and copper salt mixture may be suspended in any suitable agent, for example water or an organic liquid such as polyvinyl alcohol. The liquid may also contain a binding agent such as gum tragacanth.
