Abstract

122,606. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). Sept. 30, 1918. Heating by electricity.-An electrode for use in electric welding, formed of soft iron, steel, or an iron alloy, &c., is thinly coated with a compound having a high electron emissivity when heated, such as a compound or salt containing calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, lithium, &c., or a mixture of these. Preferably the electrode is dipped in a bath of milk of lime and allowed to dry. In addition to the alkaline material, small quantities of other substances may be added to the coating mixture; e.g. aluminium or silica suspended in silicate of potassium or sodium may be used.
