Heating by electricity.-An electrode for use in arc welding and repairing has a coating of appreciable but not substantial thickness, consisting of a substance, such as silica in the form of sodium silicate, capable of settling over the weld as a slagless, readily removable and oxidation-preventing covering. The coating may be applied by brushing or spraying. It may contain, in addition to the sodium silicate, some precipitated calcium carbonate and a substance more oxidizable than iron, such as boron or a compound thereof, or magnesium. Suitable proportions are sodium silicate 70, calcium carbonate 29, metallic magnesium 1. Finely-divided metals such as copper for modifying the deposited metal may be added. The coating may be applied over only one side of the metal rod. Specifications 21822/14, 122,606, 126,271, 128,186, and 132,354 are referred to.
