Abstract
128,186. Holslag, C. J. June 11, 1918, [Convention date]. Heating by electricity. - An electrode for arc welding or repairing is covered on one side only with a thin film of a material which forms over the cooling metal an inert covering readily removable by a stiff brush. The coating may consist principally of silica in the form of silicate of soda. Calcium carbonate and borax, to the amounts of 26 and 4 per cent respectively of the whole, may be added. Ingredients such as copper, for modifying the metal deposited, may also be made use of. The coating 5 may be applied by spraying or brushing to the electrode 4. The arc is struck on the bare side, and the coated side is held to the rear as the electrode is moved over the work, so as to prevent the coating material being deposited in advance of the arc. Alternating current is preferred, and may be taken directly from a transformer of the kind described in Specification 126,271. Specification 21822/14 also is referred to.
