Abstract

In an arc-welding electrode coated with a paste, metallic fibres, e.g. metal wool, turnings, threads, cuttings, &c., are incorporated in the paste to form an integral part thereof. The fibres preferably form 1-70 per cent of the dry coating, 20 per cent or more making the coating conductive. For core wires of mild and low alloy steel, mild steel fibres are used and for steel cores of 7-70 per cent nickel, 10-30 per cent chromium with or without niobium, molybdenum, titanium or silicon the fibres may have a composition similar to the core or to any of the individual constituents. For cores of bronze, copper or bronze fibres are used and for cores of aluminium fibres of aluminium or aluminium alloy. In an embodiment a mild steel core is coated with a paste made with sodium silicate and the following dry constituents: calcium fluoride 30 per cent, calcium carbonate 35 per cent, ferro-manganese 4 per cent, ferro-titanium 3 per cent, ferro-silicon 3 per cent, clay 5 per cent, steel fibres of same composition as the core 20 per cent.
