554,804. Steel alloy welding electrodes; fluxes. ELEKTRISKA SVETSNINGS AKTIEBOLAGET, and HELIN, E. E. V. March 16, 1942, No. 3475. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A coated electrode for arc welding has a core consisting of a steel alloy containing 0.01-0.3 per cent. of carbon, 0.3-1.5 per cent. of manganese. 0.2-1.5 per cent. of silicon, 21-26 per cent. of chromium, and 17-22 per cent. of nickel, with or without small amounts of other metals such as molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, and titanium the ratio of manganese to silicon being at least 0.8. The composition is so adjusted that the metal deposited will have a manganese to silicon ratio of at least 1.5. preferably at least 2. The coating contains alkaline earth carbonate or carbonates and a fluoride or fluorides, the content of alkaline earth oxide plus magnesium oxide being preferably 40-65 per cent. and the fluoride 15-25 per cent. A binder such as water glass, up to 15 per cent. of other slag-forming constituents such as titanium dioxide, and up to 10 per cent of ferro-manganese may be added. Another type of coating contains 30-50 per cent. of titanium dioxide. 20-45 per cent. of limestone or dolomite, and 5-15 per cent. of fluorspar, with or without up to 20 per cent. of ferro-manganese. The weight of the coating may be 20-30 per cent. of that of the core wire.
