Abstract
562,067. Uniting by fusion. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Jan. 5, 1943, No. 202. [Class 8'3 (iv)] Electric arc welding is effected with a welding wire or rod and a slag forming mass together with magnesium-aluminium alloy to counteract extinction of the arc. The alloy of magnesium and aluminium may be applied to the work as a powder either mixed with a binder, such as water glass or with the slag forming mass, or it may be placed in the hollow core of the electrode, which may be of iron or iron alloy, the slag forming mass being applied to the work or forming a coating on the electrode. The magnesium-aluminium alloy may also be mixed with a binder and applied as a coating to the core and surrounded by a further coating of slag forming material, or it may be mixed with the slag forming material to form from 2 to 5 per cent thereof. The slag forming material may also contain a reducing metal such as ferro-manganese, ferro-silicon, ferro-titanium or iron powder and may also contain up to 50 per cent of a fluoride, preferably calcium fluoride which assists in preventing extinction of the arc.
