Abstract

395,510. Uniting by fusion. ELEKTRISKA SVETSNINGS AKTIEBOLAGET and SJOMAN, P. Y., 8, Kjellbergsgatan, Gothenburg, Sweden. July 8, 1932, No. 19378. [Class 83 (iv).] In electric-arc welding cast iron or other iron, alloyed steel or non-ferrous metals, a fusible metal electrode is provided with a flux containing more than 50 per cent of a non- oxidizing metallurgic or synthetic slag of the same kind as that obtained in the manufacture of the electrode metal. The slag may be applied wholly or partly as an external coating on the electrode or to the interstices of a wire wound on the electrode. Suitable slags consist of blast furnace slag for cast-iron electrodes, slag from acid or basic Siemens-Martin, Bessemer or electrosteel furnaces for steel electrodes, and slags produced in the manufacture of aluminium or copper for aluminium or copper electrodes. Alloying metals, metallic or other deoxidants, combustible or gasforming organic or inorganic substances may also be added. The last named may consist of carbonates, oxalates, acetates, or cellulose. A binder may be used consisting of slaked lime, cement, water glass, dextrin, casein, &c. Colouring ingredients may also be used. A syntheted slag may be formed by fritting instead of by melting. Examples of coatings for steel electrodes are :-82 per cent of acid Bessemer or Siemens-Martin slag, 8 per cent of ferromanganese and 10 per cent of sodium water glass, or 57 per cent of basic Siemens- Martin slag, 25 per cent of cellulose, 8 per cent of ferromanganese and 10 per cent of dextrine. For cast-iron electrodes the coating may contain 53 per cent of blast furnace slag, 25 per cent of graphite, 10 per cent. of ferrosilicon, and 12 per cent of sodium water glass.
