Dry processes of refining copper and other metals; alloys.-An alloy or aggregate for treating molten steel, bronze, copper, and other metals or alloys comprises zirconium, silicon and an element capable of lowering the melting- point of zirconia-silica slag, which may be manganese, calcium, or boron. Iron may also be present. A zirconium-manganese-silicon alloy is preferably produced by carbon reduction in an electric furnace; or ferromanganese may be fused with a zirconium-silicon-iron alloy; or ferromanganese and a zirconium-silicon-iron alloy may be bonded with metallic or non-metallic binders such as lead, borates, boric acid, or fusible slags.
