Abstract
130,436. Hadfield, Sir R. A. June 6, 1918. Scrap processes.-The melting of manganesesteel scrap for re-use as ordinary manganese-steel is effected in an electric furnace, and the percentages of iron, carbon, and manganese in the resulting product are adjusted by adding, before or after melting, ferro-manganese, or other suitable material. Suitable additions are iron or steel free from, or low in, carbon, and a manganese alloy low in carbon; silicon-spiegel or silico-manganese, or a mixture of silico-manganese alloy and ferromanganese low in carbon, and oxide of manganese and iron or steel free from or low in carbon, with or without manganese alloy. The ferromanganese low in carbcn employed as an addition to the molten scrap may be that produced by the method described in Specification 129,426, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.] Slag-forming material, such as lime, may be added to the charge. Silicon, in the form of ferro-silicon, may also be added to the charge in the electric furnace to reduce metallic oxide present in the slag and prevent oxidation of later additions of manganese.
