Abstract

Cast steel is improved by the addition of one or more of the metals nickel, chromium, tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum and copper, the additions being added in liquid form to the molten steel during the charging in the Siemens-Martin, electric, crucible, or reverberatory furnaces, or the steel and additions being mixed before charging into the furnace. The nickel, chromium, and tungsten may be in the form of ferro-alloys or scrap alloy steel. The proportion of carbon may be more than 1 per cent and the silicon content of the steel may be increased.
