Abstract
202,664. Saltrick, W. R. Feb. 23, 1922. Alloys.-Iron-chromium alloys of the stainless or rustless type are made by reducing in a furnace a charge comprising an ore or compound of a constituent metal and a silicon-containing reducing agent, and adding the resulting metal to a bath of molten iron or iron alloy in the furnace. Fluxes such was lime and fluorspar may be used. The reducing-agent may be ferro-silicon, calciumsilicon or other silicon alloy, and may be mixed with some aluminium, ferro-calcium, calciumsilicon-aluminium, or other stronger reducing- agent. The reaction-mixture may be briquetted. Some ferro-chrome or other chromium alloy may be added to the molten bath, or may form part of the briquetted reaction-mixture; for example, the briquettes may contain chromite, ferro-silicon and an iron-chromium-silicon alloy. Instead of using chromite, chromium-silicon alloy may be used with iron oxide and chromium oxide or sodium or calcium chromate. In some cases, nickel may be added to the bath or as part of the briquettes; or nickel oxide may be present in the mixture. The process may be carried out in electric or other suitable furnaces, or in one or more converters. The alloy may be finally refined bv a blowing operation, for example that described in Specification 197,987, or by means of solid reagents such as ores or compounds of iron or chromium.
