Abstract
623,966. Refining metals. AIR REDUCTION CO., Inc. June 9, 1947, No. 15158. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1943. [Classes 72 and 82(i)] Iron and steel are desulphurized by confining calcium carbide in a small area on the surface of the molten metal and melting it by means of an electric arc or resistance heating so that the molten calcium carbide is introduced below the surface of the metal which is agitated. As shown, a refractory wall 7 having an opening 10 below the surface 6 of the metal in a ladle 5 has a recess 8 filled with calcium carbide which is melted by an electric arc formed between the electrodes 11. The molten calcium carbide reacts with the sulphur in the metal and rises to the surface as a slag together with any unreacted calcium carbide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the application of the invention to other, unspecified metals, and to the use of external heating to melt the calcium carbide. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted'.
