Abstract

197,573. Marks, E. C. R., (Electro Metallurgical Co.). June 22, 1922. Alloys. - A low-carbon iron alloy comprises iron, silicon, and zirconium, the silicon content being at least as high as the zirconium content, and each being preferably over 10 per cent. The silicon is present in sufficient proportion to prevent the formation of zirconium carbide in such quantity as to prevent a low-carbon content. The alloy may be made by melting in an electric furnace a charge comprising silica, a carbonaceous reducing-agent and a source of iron such as steel scrap. Other elements such as titanium may be present in the alloy in minor proportions.
