Abstract
527,579. Alloys; iron and steel manufacture. POTTS, H. E. (Electro Metallurgical Co.). April 15, 1939, No. 11490. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Alloys, particularly for the treatment of molten iron and steel, consist of silicon, calcium and barium, with or without iron, and are sufficiently dense to remain below the slag with which the iron or steel is covered. They may contain 50-65 per cent. of silicon and 15-40 per cent. of calcium and barium with or without small amounts of aluminium and manganese, and the ratio of barium to calcium is preferably between 1:3 and 3: 1. The alloys may be made by melting the ingredients under a silicate slag, or by reducing under a slag a mixture of silica and oxides or carbonates of calcium and barium by means of carbon, aluminium, or calcium carbide, or a mixture of oxides or carbonates of calcium and barium by means of silicon.
