Abstract

519,761. Alloys. HEAD, C. J., and HOWE, R. W. Nov. 7, 1938, No. 32279. [Class 82 (i)] Alloys of iron with metals such as chromium, tungsten or vanadum are made by introducing into a mass of molten metal through slag thereon dehydrated and degassed blocks consisting of an ore or oxide of the alloying metal, such as a chrome ore, and a non-carbonaceous reducing agent, such as a metal silicide or ferro-silicon. The ore &c. and reducing agent may be bonded by slaked lime, and the blocks may be air dried, treated with milk of lime, dried, heated to drive off any gas, and charged while hot into the molten metal. In preparing the molten bath, the oxidizing slag may be removed, and a fresh slag of lime, fluorspar, and ferro-silicon added.
