Abstract

525,223. Casting processes. LINDEMUTH, L. B. Feb. 16, 1939, No. 5159. [Class 83 (i)] In casting rimming or other steel ingots the surface of the cast metal 1 is covered with 2 to 5 inches of ground cork to retard cooling. If desired a cylindrical retainer 4 with a square base 5 may be placed on the metal before adding the cork 3. 5 to 20 per cent. of silicate of soda to retard combustion or 1 per cent. of ferrosilicon, powdered aluminium or other deoxidizer, or both retardent and deoxidizer, may be added to the cork. A second pouring of molten metal may be made through the layer of cork.
