[Classes 72 and 82 (i)] In the production of steel at suitable casting temperature which has been produced in a converter, dephosphorisation is carried out by known means either in the converter if it is a basic converter or in a ladle if the converter is either a basic or acid one and the molten steel transferred to an acid converter in which such a quantity of a reducing agent, such as silicon, whose oxide has a high heat of formation, is caused to act on the charge that by blowing for a very short time, e.g., 15 seconds, such a quantity of heat is evolved as to bring the steel to the necessary high temperature for casting. Before casting the steel may be deoxidised, e.g., by the process described in Specification 404,300. If the first treatment is carried out in an acid converter and dephosphorised in a ladle, which process may be carried out as described in Specification 405,633, the steel may be returned to the same converter for the reheating step The silicon may be used in the form of ferrosilicon and a protective substance such as manganese may be added, preferably simultaneously with the silicon and in the form of silicomanganese. To produce alloy steels, one or more alloying element, such as a nickel, may be added to the steel in the acid reheating converter.
