Alloys; dry process of extracting and refining chromium and other metals. - Iron alloys of chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, and manganese, which have been prepared under such conditions as to contain sufficient silicon to be low in carbon, are refined by treatment in a furnace with an ore or compound of one of the constituent metals, e.g. chromite, and also a more active oxidizing agent containing combined oxygen, e.g. a blast containing superheated steam or carbon dioxide, or solid reagents such as chromates or iron oxide. For example, an ironchromium alloy may be made for melting chromite with carbon and silica, or by reducing chromite with carbon and adding silicon, and the fused product may be treated first with a chromite slag and then with a slag containing a salt or compound of chromic acid; or more active oxidizing agents may be injected into or through the molten bath. Molten steel, or ferro-silicon or other additions, may be added to the bath to form part of the charge to be refined. In a further method, a high-silicon alloy is mixed with more ore and added to molten steel, the slag first formed being removed and replaced by the more active oxidizing agents. The Provisional Specifications refer also to the production of the metals chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, and manganese. Specifications 202,345, 202,664, and 203,728 are referred to.
