Abstract
271,209. Turner, B., and Ferro-Arc Welding Co., Ltd. March 29, 1926. Uniting by fusion. - A coated electrode, or welding-rod for welding cast iron or steel consists of a core of a nickel-copper alloy with a coating of flux or slag forming material. A coated electrode, or welding-rod for welding also other metals or alloys such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark as Monel metal has a core consisting of an alloy of 60 to 80 parts of nickel and 40 to 20 parts of copper coated first with a deoxidizer and then with a flux or coated with a mixture of deoxidizer and flux. The deoxidizer may be incorporated with the core during the formation thereof prior to drawing it down into wire form. Welding may be performed by the metallic or carbon arc or by the oxyacetylene process. The core metal may consist of Monel metal having 70 per cent of nickel and 30 per cent of copper. The deoxidizer may consists of commercial silicon to which may be added aluminium, vanadium or titanium either separately or together, either as pure metals or as alloys. The flux may consist of 80 parts of fluor spar or 68 parts of fluor spar and 15 parts of rutile, to which may be added 15 parts of finely ground tin-oxide and/or 5 parts of barium carbonate and/or 5 parts of sodium carbonate, with 20 parts of sodium silicate to serve as a binder. A further flux coating may consist of blue asbestos yarn or powder. An open spiral of asbestos yarn may be wound on a core coated with deoxidizer, the spaces between the turns being filled with the fluor spar mixture by extrusion &c. The deoxidizer may be powdered and mixed with a solution of shellac in methylated spirit and applied with a brush or by dipping.
