309,796. Fitzpatrick, H. D., (Maatschappij tot Vervaardiging van Snijmachines Volgens van Berkel's Patent en van Andere Werktuigen). July 18, 1928. Uniting by fusion.-In electric-arc welding a metal electrode provided with a coating of a different metal and also with a chemical mixture made into a paste with water, is used for welding while the paste is wet. An electrode of iron, soft steel or other metal is first coated with aluminium by dipping or by deposition and is then coated with a paste made by mixing borax and calcium carbide with water. The carbide is converted into slaked lime by the water. The paste may be applied to the electrodes on the job or the electrodes may be previously coated and stored in such a way as to prevent the paste drying.
