[Class 93] [See also Group XX] Surfaces such as glass, for example those used in electric discharge apparatus, are coated with a fluorescent powder, such as zinc silicate, by first applying to the surface an etching solution, containing for example dilute hydrofluoric acid, which reacts with the surface to produce an adhesive gel layer, removing excess of the solution, applying the powder as by spraying or dusting on, and drying the surface as on a hot plate or over a flame.
