Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the film strength and heat resistance of an orienting film and the adhesion of the film to a substrate of a liq. crystal display element by forming the film with a heat treatment product of polyphenylsilsesquioxane. CONSTITUTION:Polyphenylsilsesquioxane having terminal OH groups and represented by the formula or a composition consisting of the polyphenylsilsesquioxane and additives such as tetraoctyl titanate for enhancing the adhesion to a substrate is dissolved in a suitable org. solvent and applied to the substrate to form a thin film. The thin film is then heat treated to form a condensate, and by rubbing and polishing the surface in a fixed direction, an orienting film is obtd. This film is colorless and has high adhesion to the substrate, high film strength and heat resistance to a glass frit seal.
