Abstract

1366177 Modulating light SIEMENS AG 6 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 56228/72 Heading H4F In an electro-optic cell of the type comprising a layer of liquid crystal material between two plates, at least one of which is transparent, at least one plate is coated with a silicone layer to increase the degree of alignment of the liquid crystal molecules. Thus a cell exhibiting the dynamic scattering effect has a greater transparency in the non-energized state. The cell may alternatively be one in which a dichroic dye is incorporated in the liquid crystal layer. As particularly described the silicone coating is formed by immersing the plate(s) in a silicone oil or impregnating agent, or by spraying the plate(s) therewith. The treated plate may be heated to anneal the silicone layer and increase its adhesion, e.g. if the plate is of glass, and excess or unannealed silicone compound removed with a solvent.
