Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a reduction in the orienting power due to heating by coating the opposite surfaces of substrates with a specified polyamic acid, heating the acid to form thin films made of specified ring closed polymer, and rubbing the surfaces of the films. CONSTITUTION:Two glass substrates 1 are set opposite to each other at a fixed interval, the opposite surfaces of the substrates 1 are coated with a soln. of a polyamic acid having repeating units represented by formulaI, and the soln. is heated to selectively form electrically conductive transparent films made of ring closed polymer having repeating units represented by formula II in a prescribed thickness. The surfaces of the films are then rubbed with gauze or by buffing to form worn grooves in a fixed direction. Both of the films 2 and the substrates 1 are covered with liq. crystal orienting films 3, and the space between the films 3 is filled with a liq. crystal 5. A sealing wall 4 is placed at the whole peripheries of the substrates 1 to seal the liq. crystal.
