Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a sufficient colored state with a small amt. of a dye and make low voltage driving possible by sealing a cholesteric liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy contg. the dichromatic dye between substrates one of which is subjected to vertical orientation treatment and the other to horizontal orientation treatment. CONSTITUTION:A horizontal orientation treatment is applied on a substrate 11A and an electrode 12A thereon, and a vertical orientation treatment on a substrate 11B and an electrode 12B thereon by treating the surface with a silane coupling agent or the like contg. a long chain alkyl or fluoro group. The liquid crystal consisting of adding a dichromatic dye to a nematic liquid crystal composition of positive dielectric anisotropy added with a cholesteric liquid crystal or optically active material is sealed between both substrates. If voltage above threshold is applied between the electrodes 12A and 12B, both the liquid crystal and the dye orient vertically to form a decolored state 14, and when no voltage is applied, the spiral axes of the liquid crystal orient perpendicularly to the electrodes 12A, 12B, thereby assuming a dark colored state 13. In this way, the display of high density is made possible with the thinner liquid crystal layer than the case of horizontally orienting both substrate surfaces and electrodes and on lower voltage.
