Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a display device with high contrast and rapidly responding properties by using a liq. cyrstal layer prepared by adding a polychromatic dye and a substance providing spiral structure to a nematic liq. crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy and by specifying the angle of rotation of the liq. crystal molecules between both electrode substrates. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal composition 3 prepared by adding a polychromatic dye and a cholesteric liq. crysral or an optically active substance providing spiral structure to a nematic liq. crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy is held between electrode substrates 1, 2 arranging liq. crysral molecules almost parallelly at <=2 deg. angle of inclination to the surface of one substrate and at >=5 deg. to the surface of the other substrate, and the angle PSI of rotation of the liq. crystal molecules is adjusted to <3pi between both the electrodes 1, 2 so that the molecules have spiral structure and are in a colored state when no voltage is applied, and they are oriented vertically and made transparent when a voltage is applied. Thus, satisfactory writing and erasing are enabled by static or dynamic driving, and a high contrast display is obtd.
