Abstract
PURPOSE: To make possible positive type displaying by providing display electrodes and their surrounding electrodes on one electrode plate and applying voltage by the specific method in the guest-host element using positive dielectric liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: A substrate 1 which is provided with display electrodes H and surrounding electrodes S by way of an insulation layer 3 and whose one surface has been orientation-treated and a substrate 5 which is provided with a counter electrode 6 and whose surface has been orientation-treated are opposed by way of a spacer 7 with their orientation directions being made orthogonal. Positive dielectric nematic liquid crystal 8 and dichromatic dyes are sealed therein and a polarizing plate 9 is disposed to the upper side of the substrate 1, whereby the guest-host element is formed. In using, voltage above threshold is always applied to the surrounding electrodes S and the voltage above threshold is applied at the non-displaying and the voltage below threshold at the displaying to the segments of the display electrodes H, whereby the desired segments of the display electrodes H are displayed to positive type.
