Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the visual angle dependency of display and make possible colored displaying against colorless ground forming the liquid cystal display element from the substrates provided with electrode which apply electric fields parallel to the substrate plane to liquid crystal material and the liquid crystal compounded with dichromatic coloring members.
CONSTITUTION: In, e.g., a liquid crystal display element for bar display, the liquid crystal material 12 composed of the nematic liquid crystal compounded with dichromatic coloring members is sealed between the substrate 10 provided with stripe-form electrodes 13a, 13b, ... and a substrate 11 (the substarates 10, 11 are subjected to surface treatment so that the liquid crystal material assumes perpendicular orientation with respect to the substrates when there is no voltage application and at least one of them is constituted by transparent material) whereby the liquid crystal display element is formed. The abovementioned display element is colorless when no voltage is applied. When voltage is applied between the electrode 13a, 13b, etc., the liquid crystal material 12 between such electrodes orients parallel to the substrate 10 and the colored displaying by the coloring members contained is accomplished.
