Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a display which is clear in contrast and free from visual angle dependence, by forming the horizontal orientation agent layer by providing a liquid crystal composite which is two-colored and has dielectric anisotropy on two substrates, and orienting one or both of them in parallel on the surface of the orientation agent layer but in the unequal direction.
CONSTITUTION: A horizontal orientation film is formed by resin of polyamide resin, etc. or inorganic material of SiO2, etc. on the glass substrate having a transparent electrode. However, at least one of two substrates which have been covered with the horizontal orientation film is oriented in parallel but unequally on the orientation layer surface of the orientation film. A liquid crystal composite having positive dielectric anisotropy and a composite containing two-colored dyestuff, or a composite containing a liquid crystal which has both the positive dielectric anisotropy and the two-colored quality are enclosed between said substrates. As a result, when the electric field is not applied, the liquid crystal is horizontally oriented on the electrode surface irregularly, and when the electric field is applied, only the liquid crystal between the electrodes is vertically oriented on the electrode surface, the color base is oriented, and a display of a clear contrast of coloring and noncoloring can be obtained. The orientation of the orientation layer by means of rubbing is not required, and the yield is elevated.
