Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a bright high-contrast display by orienting liq. crystal molecules perpendicularly to the surface of each substrate and orienting liq. crystal molecules in parallel with the surface so that the orientations of the molecules of the 1st and 2nd layers meet at right angles when an electric field is applied. CONSTITUTION:Perpendicularly orienting films 31, 32, 33, 34 are formed on glass substrates 11, 12, 13 having transparent electrodes 21, 22, 23, 24, respectively, and after rubbing the surfaces of films 31-34 so that preferential orientation is carried out in the lateral direction in the 1st liq. crystal layer and in the direction perpendicular to this paper in the 2nd liq. crystal layer, a mixture of nematic liq. crystal 4 with negative dielectric anisotropy and dichromatic dye 5 is sealed among substrates 11-13. In a part with no electric field applied crystal 4 and dye 5 orient perpendicularly and assume transparency. In a part with an electric field applied they orient parallelly and the orientations of the 1st and 2nd layers meet at right angles. Thus, a bright high-contract display is obtd. since no polarizing plate is contained. A dichromatic N type nematic liq. crystal may be used.
