Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high-contrast display without color unevenness and leakage of the light, by sealing a nematic liquid crystal, where the molecular axis has a specific torsional orientation structure, between transparent electrode substrates. CONSTITUTION:A mixture layer 4 where a multicolor dye and an optically active substance (such as cholesteryl chloride) are mixed in the nematic liquid crystal showing a positive dielectric anisotropy is sealed between transparent electrode substrates 2 and 3 which have transparent conductive films 2b and 3b formed on faces facing to each other of two parallel plane-plate transparent substrates 2a and 3a and are subjected to the transversal orientation treatment, and liquid crystal molecules 1 constituting the mixture layer 4 are turned gradually by 270 deg. from the substrate 2 toward the substrate 3 when an electric field is not applied. A linear polarizer 6 having the polarization axis parallel to the molecular axis of liquid crystal molecule 1 which is in contact with the substrate 3 is provided outside the substrate 3, and a light source 7 is provided outside of the linear polarizer 6. Since the light incident to the liquid crystal cell i s absorbed by dye molecule with sufficiently high efficiency when the electric field is not applied, a uniform color display without color unevenness is possible.
